"Litany was written for John Wallace in 1999. The title refers to the ruined mediaeval chapel on the Holms of Ire, Sanday, next to my new home there. I imagined the music being played in the ruin, open to the skies, in the vast stillness of that haunted land and seascape." - Peter Maxwell Davies This film is the result of that composer's note - myself and filmmaker Tim Williams travelled up to the ruined chapel and made this film; a tribute to Max, his music, and a place he loved. 00:00 - I. Adagio recitando 05:48 - II. Lento 09:05 - III. Presto vigoroso Credits: Performed by Lucy Humphris Music produced and edited by Simon Kiln Filmed and edited by Tim Williams NEW ALBUM: https://rubiconclassics.com/release/lucy-humphris-obscurus/ This film would not have been possible without the generous support of The Max Trust. https://www.themaxtrust.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lucy Humphris: https://www.lucyhumphris.com https://twitter.com/HumphrisLucy https://www.instagram.com/le_humph/?hl=en https://open.spotify.com/artist/2kYdsNXIJJQ3YH5Qqhhnip

The first movement - Balletto - from Respighi's first suite of Ancient Airs and Dances, arranged by Lucy Humphris. The original work was composed in 1917, as a free arrangement of 16th-18th century lute pieces, and this arrangement hearkens back to the original source material, paring down some of Respighi's orchestration in order to suit the trumpet and piano.
